Low fat high fiber diet is recommended. See that your diet contains lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Reduced the salt intake to 6g/day (roughly teaspoon full).
Regular exercise is important. It helps to bring down your cholesterol level and helps you control your blood pressure. Moderate intensity aerobic activity like cycling or brisk walking at least 20 to 25 minutes per day is recommended.Those who are recovering from stroke should consult with their doctors for specific advise regarding physical activity.
Smoking causes your arteries to narrow and this exponentially increases the chance of blood getting clotted in your brain. Quitting smoking also reduces your risk of developing lung cancer and heart disease.
Excessive alcohol intake can cause blood pressure to rise which in turn increases the risk of stroke. There is also the possibility of irregular heartbeat when you consume large amounts of alcohol. This can also lead to stroke.
Recommendation is that you should restrict your drinks to 14 units of alcohol per week. It is also advised to spread your drinking over three or more days if you are drinking as much as 14 units of alcohol.
- TAKE CARE OF OTHER DISEASE CONDITIONS:
If you are diagnosed with other disease conditions that may increase the risk of stroke, taking proper treatment for that is also important in preventing stroke (Eg:- Diabetes, High BP, High Cholesterol, Heart Conditions).
