WHAT IS PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY?.


Nerves are pathways through which information from and to our brain goes. They are responsible for carrying various sensations to our brain so that we may feel it( eg: touch, vision). Nerves also carry information from our brain to different part of our body. For example when our brain sends necessary information through a nerve to muscles of our leg, we walk.

Peripheral Neuropathy is a disease cause by damage to the nerves by various pathology's. The common symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy are:

  • Numbness  over a part of body or limbs.
  • Pins and Needle sensation.
  • Burning sensation over a part of body or limbs.
  • Weakness of  limbs.
  • Wasting of muscles.
  • Changes in Blood Pressure and Heart rate.
  • Loss of appetite/ Bowel or bladder problems.
  • Abnormal Sweating.

Common causes Of Peripheral Neuropathy:

  • Diabetes
  • Alcoholism
  • Autoimmune Diseases.
  • Exposure to Toxins.
  • Vitamin deficiencies.
  • Certain Medications.
  • Inherited Disorders.
  • Infections.
  • Tumors.
  • Trauma.
  • Monoclonal Gammopathies.
Your Neurologist may be able to detect peripheral Neuropathy by clinical examination and Nerve Conduction Study. If detected to be having Peripheral Neuropathy, further evaluation to the cause of disease is warranted for proper treatment.

       It is important to notice neuropathic symptoms early and seek Neurology help.
